First Nation Healing Centre Update
A new Transition Housing Shelter in Fisher River, Manitoba is opening soon.
The First Nation Healing Centre is a temporary housing shelter that offers services for up to 50 days. This is not nearly enough time for families to heal from family, domestic violence, and the trauma of these situations. The limited time frame of the temporary shelter has been a factor for women and their children leaving their homes.
This was part of the reason for seeking the new transitional shelter, and a five-complex apartment was built.
'Kah Pa Pak,' the Cree word for butterfly, symbolizes the transformative journey when a woman leaves abuse/violence behind and transitions into a safe, beautiful life for herself and her children. This symbol of hope and transformation is at the heart of our new shelter.
The Fisher River Chief and Council and the staff at the FNHC (First Nation Healing Centre) held a ground blessing ceremony at the construction site on May 29th, 2023, and will open their doors in August or September 2024.
