Wasauksing Family Violence Shelter & Transitional House Update

Wasauksing Family Violence Shelter & Transitional House The Wasauksing Family Violence Shelter and Transitional House will be situated within the serene surroundings of Wasauksing First Nation, nestled on a picturesque island in Mnidoo-gamii Georgian Bay. This location borders the municipality of Parry Sound and Seguin Township, offering a tranquil and supportive environment for those seeking refuge and support.

The concept for the Family Violence Shelter and Transitional Home emerged from a longstanding community tradition of coming together annually. Despite facing construction delays and setbacks due to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the community persevered, breaking ground in August of 2023. With determination and resilience, the Shelter is set to open its doors to clients in November 2024, followed by the Transitional House in the spring of 2025, marked by a special naming ceremony conducted by the esteemed Elders of the community.

Designed to provide sanctuary and healing, the Family Violence Shelter will offer accommodation for up to 10 individuals in single, double, and family rooms, integrating cultural elements throughout its structure. Embracing the principles of healing and wellness, the Shelter will feature communal spaces, a serene courtyard, and access to land-based programs aimed at fostering and strengthening cultural identity.

These programs will include traditional practices such as sweats, ceremonies, and fasting, conducted on the sacred cultural ground of 3 Mile Island, ensuring a holistic approach to healing and empowerment for all who seek refuge within its walls. The shelter will provide inclusive support services, welcoming individuals regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

The Transitional Housing, scheduled to open in the Spring of 2025, will be complemented by an outreach team dedicated to providing support. It will consist of two three-bedroom units, two two-bedroom units, and two one-bedroom units, providing a total of twenty-four beds. The Wasauksing Family Violence Shelter and Transitional House will be available to community members and individuals from the seven neighbouring communities (confirm this with Shane). Individuals will have the option to self-refer or seek a referral through one of the partner organizations.
