LANDFILL DISCOVERY IN MANITOBA

Yet another major reason for systemic change. The violence against First Nations people continues, as well as the systemic neglect that still exists. First Nation women, girls, two-spirit people, men and boys continue to go missing and are murdered at unacceptable rates.

On Thursday, February 27th, 2025, the announcement came that there was a discovery of human remains at the Prairie Green Landfill near Winnipeg. In 2022, two women, Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris were murdered by a serial killer. Indigenous women were the primary target for this killer. He preyed upon vulnerable, Indigenous women undoubtedly because he believed that they would not be missed, and that law enforcement would not put forth much effort in finding their killer. While Indigenous women are deeply loved and missed by their friends and families, but there is still much work to be done in changing the attitudes of law enforcement, and meaningful changes to the law itself.

The community and loved ones of Marcedes and Morgan faced continuous uphill battles to have the landfill site searched, but they refused to give up. It is deeply saddening that these remains have been discovered, but it is one step closer to giving the families and community answers and giving these women back their dignity.

The NICAFV family wishes to express their deepest and most heartfelt support to all the friends, family members, and the community of Marcedes and Morgan.

AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson has credited the families, community members, and her predecessor, the late Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, for their tireless efforts in searching happen despite so many roadblocks and obstacles.
