Congratulations to Beausoleil First Nation on the Groudbreaking Celebration for the new
G’chi Mnissing’s New Shelter!
Beausoleil First Nation, Treaty 16 Territory, is located on the southern shores of Georgian Bay on Christian Island in Simcoe County, Ontario. It is a remote community home to approximately 2,925 registered members, of whom approximately 660 reside on the territory year-round. The community is known as G’chi Mnissing, which means “big island” in Anishinaabemowin.
Anishinaabe is distinct to the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa language groups. Beausoleil First Nation is made up of the Ojibwe and Potawatomi people.
The First Nation consists of three Islands known as Christian, Hope and Beckwith, as well as land on the mainland at Cedar Point. Anishinaabeg predominately reside on Christian Island however several families live year-round at Cedar Point. For the most part, the land on Hope and Beckwith Islands are in their natural state making both sites popular for camping and boating.
